George Véras Valentim
Senior Full Stack Engineer & Technical Lead · Vancouver, BC
Full Stack Engineer, Engineering Architect, Startup Founder, and Builder of Things.
Senior full-stack engineer and technical leader with 15+ years building products at national and enterprise scale — from a government identity app used by 40M+ Brazilians to ad platforms sustaining 1,200 requests per second. Known for driving engineering culture shifts — observability, accessibility, AI adoption — as much as for shipping complex systems. Based in Vancouver, BC, and open to Lead and Staff Engineer opportunities.
Work Experience
15+ years across startups, scale-ups, enterprise, and government-grade systems in Brazil and Canada.
- Took ownership of the Invoices feature with nothing already built on the server side — built the entire backend from scratch over ~12 months, driving 87% enterprise client adoption (1,198 of 1,709 active sites) and cutting support tickets by 87% (avg. 10/month → 3/month after launch).
- Inherited full ownership of the platform's translation and localisation across 4 languages (English, French, Spanish, and UK English) with no handoff and no documentation when the previous owner left — delivered consistently every sprint for 3.5 years. Eventually automated the entire process so that new translations deploy to the product without any manual steps.
- Turned a forgotten, unused monitoring tool — no dashboards, no visibility into what was happening in production, no culture around it — into a company-wide standard. Built the first production dashboards across every major system owned; teams across the organisation independently adopted the practice as a delivery default.
- Sole maintainer and architect of the Instance Manager — the internal system responsible for onboarding every enterprise client, where a failure means no new clients can be set up. When the original author left the company, became one of two engineers keeping it running, and later designed the complete modernisation plan — reviewed and approved by technical leadership.
- One of 3 engineers who built the Security Alerts system end-to-end over 6 months — the feature that automatically detects safety incidents affecting corporate travellers worldwide and notifies them in real time via email and push notification. The only engineer to add production monitoring, giving the company its first real-time view of global traveller safety events — used by 260+ people across 200+ enterprise clients.
- Built the integration connecting WhereTo to clients' enterprise finance accounts via Microsoft Dynamics 365, giving corporate travel managers real-time visibility into their account statements directly inside the platform — one of the largest single feature deliveries in the product's history, shipped with full multi-country and multi-currency support.
- Noticed that enterprise clients were asking about accessibility in procurement evaluations and the product had no answer. Initiated and led the first accessibility programme in the platform's history — designing a 3-phase plan and delivering the foundation that all future accessibility work builds on.
- One of the earliest advocates for AI-assisted engineering tools on the team — applied AI to automate time-consuming tasks and shared findings with colleagues until the whole team adopted similar workflows, with teammates publicly crediting the shift in team retrospectives.
- Inherited the Invoices feature with no backend in place and built it end-to-end over ~12 months. The result: 87% of active enterprise clients adopted the feature (1,198 of 1,709 sites), and the volume of invoice-related support requests dropped by 87% — from an average of 10 complaints per month down to 3.
- Joined a company with a monitoring tool already installed but completely unused — no dashboards, no visibility into production systems, no culture around it. Built the first monitoring dashboards from scratch, applied them to every system owned, and kept advocating until teams across the engineering organisation adopted the practice independently. What started as one person's initiative became a company-wide engineering standard.
- When the original author of the Instance Manager left the company, became one of only two engineers responsible for keeping it running — the internal system that onboards every new enterprise client, with no backup if it breaks. Designed the complete plan to modernise it entirely alone: documented every risk, designed every component, estimated the full scope, and had it reviewed and approved by technical leadership. The migration is now underway.
- Sole front-end engineer on Downstream, Jungle Scout's acquired Ad Tech subsidiary — independently owned the entire React codebase for over a year.
- Introduced and built Storybook from the ground up with 100+ reusable components, progressively adopted across the wider Jungle Scout organisation.
- Mentored and onboarded the team's second front-end engineer, establishing component standards and documentation for a smooth handoff.
- Joined at the founding stage of a Chrome extension that intelligently deep-crawled Google results to surface page-level summaries — dramatically cutting research time for journalists and academics.
- One of 4 engineers on a near-greenfield codebase; built features across the full stack from React frontend to the Node.js microservice mesh powering the crawler.
- Introduced Storybook and built the product's dark theme, improving developer experience and UI polish.
- Built a fleet of 7 domain-specific microservices (ad search, finances, user management, and more) powering ad delivery across Americanas, Submarino, and Shoptime — Latin America's largest e-commerce group.
- Engineered a system sustaining peaks of 1,200 ads/second during Black Friday, with auto-scaling infrastructure that adjusted dynamically based on season.
- Contributed to the infrastructure migration from Marathon/Mesos to Kubernetes, improving reliability and scalability of the ad platform.
- The team's architecture became a reference model adopted company-wide across B2W.
- Founded and built a LinkedIn-style platform for construction and renovation professionals — architects, designers, painters, and electricians could create portfolio profiles and be discovered by clients.
- Took product from zero to 4 paying clients, handling product design, engineering, marketing, and UX independently.
- Implemented advanced SEO with JSON-LD structured data and built with screen-reader accessibility as a first-class concern.
- Five years at Brazil's largest identity and information security company, serving federal government clients on a team of 10.
- Acted as senior engineering architect — designed the architecture of most systems and coordinated the developers who implemented them.
- Built and trained the company's first dedicated front-end team from scratch, introducing JavaScript, Angular, Sass, and Scrum.
- Concurrently taught a C#.Net course at Digidata (Mar–Aug 2012).
- Developed the first Brazilian government document production line in the cloud — Angular SPA consuming a microservices backend.
- Solely designed & developed eCNH — Brazil's first digital driver's license Android app — entirely alone, from scratch, through to national launch. Now used by 40M+ Brazilians (≈44% of all licensed drivers).
- Designed the QR Code security element now embedded in every Brazilian driver's license — and built the companion authority scanning app for police to verify document authenticity in real-time, eliminating widespread forgery.
